Collaborative Design-Build Studio
Communal Reconfigurable Objects (C.O.R.O.) is a collaborative design-build project developed for the community room at
Mandela House, a transitional housing facility in West Oakland serving residents transitioning from encampments to stable
housing. The project explores how adaptable furniture can support community building and everyday activities in shared
spaces. Through participatory workshops and meetings with residents, the team gathered feedback to understand how the space could better support gathering, working, and informal social interaction. The resulting design is a modular furniture system composed of movable tables, benches, and pegboard elements that can be reconfigured for different uses, encouraging flexibility, collaboration, and resident engagement within the community room.
